What is Twilio Flex?

Twilio Flex is a programmable contact centre platform built on Twilio's communications APIs, letting organisations assemble the agent interface, routing and integrations themselves rather than configuring a fixed product, with AI assistance and Twilio's support plans sold alongside.

Being programmable rather than configurable is the entire distinction and it decides whether Flex is right for a given buyer. A packaged contact centre gives you what the vendor built and a settings page; Flex gives you the components and expects engineering capacity, which is a genuine advantage for an organisation with unusual requirements and a liability for one without developers.

Running on Twilio's own channels is what makes that practical, since the voice, SMS, WhatsApp and email infrastructure underneath is the same that carries a large share of the world's programmatic messaging, so the building blocks are proven even when the assembly is bespoke.

The support plans are worth reading before committing, because Twilio charges for support as a percentage of spend above a minimum, which is unusual and means the true cost of running a critical contact centre includes a support tier most buyers do not price in. Flex usage rates are quoted separately.

A packaged contact centre gives you what the vendor built and a settings page. Flex gives you components and expects engineering capacity, which suits unusual requirements and penalises a team without developers.

An organisation without engineering capacity, which will spend more assembling Flex than it would configuring a packaged contact centre.
