Exit intent is the capability that distinguishes this from general survey tooling, and the underlying idea applies well beyond websites.

Exit intent detects that someone is about to leave, and asks them why at that moment. On a website that means detecting the cursor moving toward the browser controls and presenting a short question before the tab closes.

The reason it works is timing. Somebody who abandons a purchase and receives an email survey two days later has forgotten the specifics, rationalises the decision, and mostly does not reply. Asked at the moment of leaving, they will frequently say exactly what stopped them, because the reason is present in their mind and answering costs one sentence.

That principle is why the same product appears in exit interview contexts. The most useful moment to ask an employee why they are leaving is not the formal interview conducted by HR in their final week, when they are managing a reference and a professional relationship. It is closer to the decision itself, and anonymously.

The honest limitation of exit-intent surveys is response bias in the other direction: the people who answer are the ones willing to be interrupted, and a single-question response captures the proximate reason rather than the underlying one. Somebody says the price was too high when they mean they were not convinced of the value.
