Compliance case management is the underlying function and it covers work most organisations handle badly because it arrives unpredictably and must be handled carefully.

A compliance case begins with a report: a hotline call, an ethics concern, a harassment allegation or a regulatory issue. Each requires acknowledgement, assignment to an investigator without a conflict of interest, an investigation with documented steps, a determination, and a record that will withstand scrutiny if the matter escalates.

Done in email and shared documents, that process fails in predictable ways. Cases stall because nobody owns them, the record of what was investigated is incomplete, and the organisation cannot demonstrate afterwards that it responded appropriately, which is the question regulators and courts actually ask.

Faster resolution matters more than efficiency here. A harassment complaint left open for months causes harm regardless of the eventual finding, both to the complainant and to the person accused, and the delay itself becomes a component of the organisation's liability.
