What is Microsoft SQL Server?

Microsoft SQL Server is Microsoft's relational database, sold in Standard, Enterprise and free Developer and Express editions, with Reporting Services, Integration Services and Analysis Services included, and Azure SQL as the managed cloud equivalent.

Bundling reporting, integration and analysis into the same licence is what distinguished SQL Server commercially for years, and it still shapes who uses it. A mid-sized company gets an extract-transform-load tool, a reporting server and an analytical engine without buying three products, which is why so many internal business systems were built on it.

Running on Linux since 2017 removed the assumption that defined the product for two decades, and it matters more for containers than for servers: a database that can run in a Linux container fits modern deployment pipelines in a way a Windows-only engine cannot.

The free Developer edition being functionally identical to Enterprise is an underappreciated Microsoft decision, because it means a team can build and test against exactly what production will run without a licence, and the gap between development and production environments is where a great many database problems originate. No. SQL Server has run on Linux since 2017, which matters most for containers, since a database that runs in a Linux container fits modern deployment pipelines.

A free edition functionally identical to Enterprise, so a team can build and test against exactly what production runs, which removes a common source of database problems.

Azure SQL is the managed cloud equivalent, sharing the engine, so applications and skills transfer between the self-managed and managed forms.
