What is IBM Db2?

Db2 is IBM's relational database family spanning Db2 for z/OS on the mainframe, Db2 on Linux, Unix and Windows, and managed cloud offerings, with in-database machine learning and integration into IBM's data and AI portfolio.

Db2 for z/OS is the part of this family that matters most and the part least visible outside the organisations that run it, because a large share of the world's card transactions, banking ledgers and insurance policy systems are held there. Those workloads have run for decades and their reliability requirements are of a different order from ordinary enterprise software.

That is also the honest reason to be careful comparing Db2 against modern alternatives, since the features that matter to a mainframe workload, meaning utterly predictable throughput, decades-long data format stability and recovery guarantees, are not the features a benchmark measures.

In-database machine learning and the connection into IBM's wider data and AI portfolio is the current direction, and the argument is the same one Oracle makes: the data lives here and moving it out to score a model costs latency the transaction cannot spare. pureScale clustering, workload management and compression make up the operational side, and the SQL surface is shared across z/OS, Linux, Unix and Windows so skills transfer between them.
