What is CockroachDB?

CockroachDB is a distributed SQL database positioned as a system of record, offered as a hosted service, as a bring-your-own-cloud deployment and as self-hosted software, with a free tier, consumption-based Standard pricing and Advanced and Enterprise tiers, including MCP, CLI and Agent Skills.

Surviving failure without operator intervention is the property CockroachDB is built around and the name is a deliberate reference to it. Data is replicated across nodes with consensus, so losing a machine, a rack or an entire region is a degradation rather than an outage, and no human decides which replica becomes primary.

Keeping SQL and real transactions while distributing is the harder engineering claim and the reason teams choose it over a NoSQL store. The previous generation of distributed databases asked developers to give up joins, foreign keys and multi-row transactions, and most applications that gave them up spent years reimplementing them badly in application code.

Bring your own cloud is the deployment option worth noting, since it puts the data in the customer's own account under their own controls while Cockroach Labs operates it, which resolves the tension between wanting a managed service and not wanting the data to leave. A free tier is published.

CockroachDB speaks the PostgreSQL wire protocol, so most PostgreSQL drivers and tools connect to it directly.
