How to Change Snapchat Friend Emojis (2026 Steps)
Updated October 2026: Snapchat moved Friend Emojis. The option now sits under My App in Settings, and the older routes through “Additional Services” and the Chat screen menu are gone. The steps below follow Snapchat’s own help page.
Friend Emojis are the small icons next to names in your Chat list, such as the fire for a Snapstreak or the yellow heart for your number one Best Friend. Snapchat assigns them automatically based on how you and your friends use the app, and you can swap the default emoji for each type with one you prefer. The change only affects what you see, not what your friends see.
How to change Friend Emojis on iPhone
- Tap your Bitmoji or profile icon to open your Profile, then tap the gear icon to open Settings.
- Scroll down to App & Privacy and tap My App.
- Under Customize My App, tap Friend Emojis.
- Pick the type you want to change, for example Snapstreak or Super BFF, then tap the new emoji.
- Tap back to save. The new emoji appears next to friends in that category.
How to change Friend Emojis on Android
- Open your Profile and tap the gear icon to open Settings.
- Scroll down to App & Privacy and tap My App.
- Tap Customize Emojis.
- Choose a category and select the replacement emoji.
- Go back to save your choice.
How to reset to the default emojis
At the bottom of the Friend Emojis screen there is a Reset to default option. Tap it and confirm to return every category to Snapchat’s standard emoji.
Things to know
- Not every emoji is available. Snapchat notes that the custom options can vary by device, and some emojis cannot be used.
- Emojis change on their own. They are based on recent activity, so a friend can move from one category to another over time. Customising changes the icon, not the rules behind it.
- Lost Best Friend emojis cannot be brought back. Snapchat says it cannot add, restore or replace Best Friend emojis. They return only if your activity puts that friend back in the category.
- Pinned chats use them too. The emoji you choose for pinned conversations can also be customised.

FAQs
Where is Friend Emojis in Snapchat settings?
Open Settings from your Profile, scroll to App & Privacy and tap My App. On iPhone it is under Customize My App as Friend Emojis; on Android it is called Customize Emojis.
Can my friends see the emojis I choose?
No. Custom Friend Emojis only change what you see in your own app.
Can I change the Snapstreak fire emoji?
Yes. Snapstreak is one of the categories on the Friend Emojis screen, so you can replace the fire with another emoji.
Why did a Best Friend emoji disappear?
Friend Emojis are based on recent activity. If you and that friend interact less, the emoji can change or disappear, and Snapchat cannot restore it manually.
