How to Enable Camera Access for Snapchat (iPhone, Android, Web)
Snapchat is built around the camera, so if it cannot use it you see a black screen, a “camera access” prompt, or a frozen viewfinder. Almost every case comes down to one permission. This guide shows how to turn camera access on for iPhone, Android and Snapchat for Web, and what to try when it is on and still not working. Last checked against Snapchat’s help pages in October 2026.
Turn on camera access on iPhone
- Open the iPhone Settings app.
- Scroll down and tap Snapchat.
- Switch Camera on. Switch Microphone on too if you want sound in video Snaps.
- Close Snapchat completely and open it again.
You can check what Snapchat currently has access to inside the app as well: tap your Profile icon, tap the gear icon, scroll to App & Privacy, tap My Privacy & Data, then Permissions. Snapchat lists Camera there as the permission it uses “to take Snaps, video chat, add friends by Snapcode, and more”.
Turn on camera access on Android
- Open the Android Settings app.
- Tap Apps (on some phones Apps & notifications), then Snapchat.
- Tap Permissions, then Camera.
- Choose Allow only while using the app.
- Do the same for Microphone, then reopen Snapchat.
Menu names vary a little between Samsung, Pixel and other phones, but the path is always Settings, Apps, Snapchat, Permissions.
Turn on camera access on Snapchat for Web
- Open Snapchat for Web in your browser.
- Click the lock icon at the left of the address bar.
- Switch on Camera and Microphone.
- Refresh the page.
Camera access is on but the camera still does not work
- Close other camera apps. A video call or another camera app can hold on to the camera.
- Update Snapchat from the App Store or Google Play.
- Clear the Snapchat cache. Our guide on how to clear cache on Snapchat has the current steps; it does not delete Memories, Snaps or Chats.
- Restart your phone to release the camera from any stuck process.
- Check Screen Time or parental controls. On iPhone, Content & Privacy Restrictions can block the camera for some apps.
- Test the camera in another app. If the built-in camera app also fails, the problem is the phone, not Snapchat.
