Updated October 2026: Snapchat has no gender setting on your profile. What people see is your Bitmoji avatar. To change how your avatar presents, you either edit it inside Snapchat or reset it in the Bitmoji app and build a new one. The steps below follow Snapchat’s and Bitmoji’s own help pages.
Option 1: Edit your Bitmoji inside Snapchat
Snapchat lets you change your avatar’s look without leaving the app:
- Open Snapchat and tap your Bitmoji or Story icon at the top to open My Account.
- Swipe down or tap your avatar to open the customization menu.
- Tap Avatar to change its appearance, Fashion to change its clothes, or Selfie and Scene to change how it appears on your profile.
- Save your changes. They show up on your profile and in Chat straight away.
Snapchat notes that full avatar editing only works in the mobile app, not on Snapchat for Web or desktop.
If you do not have a Bitmoji yet, tap your profile icon, choose Create My Avatar, and Snapchat walks you through building one, including picking the avatar’s gender at the start.
Option 2: Reset your avatar in the Bitmoji app
According to Bitmoji support, the way to switch an existing avatar’s gender is to reset it and start again:
- Open the Bitmoji app.
- Tap the gear icon to open settings.
- Tap My Data.
- Choose the option to reset your avatar and confirm.
- Create the new avatar, choosing the gender you want at the first step, then customize face, hair and body.
Two things to know before you reset. All of your current customizations are lost, and Bitmoji warns that some limited-time items you picked up may not come back. Because Snapchat and Bitmoji are linked, the new avatar replaces the old one on Snapchat automatically.
What about body shape and style?
Bitmoji’s current 3D avatar style handles body proportions, hair texture and face shading in more detail than the older look did. The older Bitstrips and Classic styles are no longer supported and cannot be switched back to. Clothing is changed separately: in the Bitmoji app, tap the hanger icon to open the fashion screen and pick each item and its colour.
Gender-swap Lenses
If you only want to see what you would look like as a different gender in a Snap, that is a Lens, not a profile change. Snapchat has run gender-swap Lenses on and off for years. Open the camera, tap the Lens icon, and search for “gender swap” in Lens Explorer to see which versions are available now. Lenses change only the photo or video you take; they do not change your profile or Bitmoji.
