5 Best Video Downloader Apps for Android in 2026 (Rechecked)

Updated October 2026: we rechecked every app on this list. One of the original seven, Videoder, is no longer online, and one, Pure Tuber, has turned into a player rather than a downloader. The rest are still available. Most video downloaders are not on Google Play, because Google’s policy does not allow apps that download from YouTube, so you install them from the developer’s own site or from F-Droid. That makes it important to get them from the right address.

The best video downloader apps for Android at a glance

  • Snaptube: downloads from many video and social sites, MP4 up to 1080p or MP3
  • TubeMate: long-running YouTube downloader with a built-in browser
  • VidMate: video, music and image downloads from many sites
  • NewPipe: free, open-source YouTube client with downloads, from F-Droid
  • KeepVid: a website rather than an app, works in any mobile browser
  • Pure Tuber: now a video and MP3 player, no longer a downloader
  • Videoder: offline, no longer available

Snaptube

Snaptube is one of the most widely used Android downloaders. It works like a browser with a download button: you search or paste a link, pick a format, and save the file. It supports MP4 at several resolutions up to 1080p and can convert to MP3 for audio only. It covers popular platforms including Facebook, Instagram and Vimeo, and lets you download several files in a batch. Snaptube is free and funded by in-app advertising. Download it only from snaptube.com. If you want to edit clips after downloading, a separate video maker can trim and enhance them for social posts.

TubeMate

TubeMate has been around for more than a decade and is still maintained, with its official site at tubemate.net. It focuses on YouTube and saves video in MP4 or audio in MP3 and M4A at a choice of qualities. It runs on most Android versions and plays files inside the app. Several fake TubeMate apps circulate, so use the link from the official site rather than a third-party APK store. Our TubeMate guide covers setup in detail.

VidMate

VidMate (vidmate.app) downloads video, music and images from a long list of sites and includes a built-in browser for finding content. It offers several resolutions and a download manager that can pause and resume. Like Snaptube, it is ad supported and installed as an APK from its own site.

NewPipe

NewPipe (newpipe.net) is the privacy-friendly choice. It is free, open source and has no ads or Google account requirement. It works as a lightweight YouTube client that can play videos in the background, show them in a pop-up window, and download video or audio. It is distributed through F-Droid, the open-source app store, and through the project’s own site.

KeepVid

KeepVid (keepvid.ch) is a website rather than an app. You open it in your phone’s browser, paste a video link and download the file, so there is nothing to install. That makes it a good fallback when you do not want to sideload an APK.

Pure Tuber (now a player)

Pure Tuber used to be listed as a downloader. Its official site now describes it as a video and MP3 player, focused on ad-free playback and background play, so we no longer recommend it for downloading.

Videoder (offline)

Videoder was a popular downloader that supported more than 20 sites and resolutions up to 4K. Its official site is no longer online in October 2026. Be careful with APK sites that still offer “Videoder” downloads, because there is no longer an official source to check them against.

How to install a downloader safely

  1. Go to the developer’s official site listed above, not a search ad or an APK mirror.
  2. Allow installs from your browser only when Android asks, and turn that permission off again afterwards.
  3. Check the app’s permissions after installing. A downloader needs storage access, not your contacts or SMS.
  4. Keep Google Play Protect switched on so Android can scan the app.

Downloaded videos still belong to the people who made them. Saving a clip to watch offline is a personal use; reposting it is a different matter. For YouTube specifically, see our YouTube downloader roundup.

FAQs

What is the best video downloader app for Android?

Snaptube is the most versatile choice for downloading from many sites. NewPipe is the best option if you want a free, open-source app with no ads, mainly for YouTube.

Why are video downloaders not on Google Play?

Google Play’s policy does not allow apps that download YouTube videos, so most downloaders are installed from the developer’s own site or from F-Droid.

Is Videoder still available?

No. Videoder’s official site is offline. Copies on APK sites cannot be checked against an official source, so avoid them.

Is it safe to install a downloader APK?

It is reasonably safe if you download from the official site, keep Play Protect on and check permissions. The main risk comes from fake copies on third-party APK sites.
