SSYouTube: Does the “ss” Trick Still Work in 2026?

Updated October 2026: when we checked on 27 October 2026, ssyoutube.com redirected visitors from the United States to a “blocked” page. Availability varies by country.

SSYouTube was famous for one trick: add “ss” before “youtube.com” in a video’s address (for example ssyoutube.com/watch?v=…) and you landed on a download page for that video. It offered MP4 and MP3 options at several qualities.

Does the trick still work?

In some countries the site now shows a blocked page instead of the download options, so the “ss” trick no longer works reliably. Converter sites are frequently blocked or closed after complaints from rights holders, which is why their availability changes from country to country.

Alternatives

• YouTube Premium: the official way to save videos for offline viewing.
• 4K Video Downloader Plus: desktop app for videos, playlists and channels.
• cobalt: open-source, ad-free web downloader.
• SaveFrom.net and ClipConverter.cc: web converters that were working in October 2026.

Compare them in our YouTube downloader roundup, or follow our step-by-step guide on how to download YouTube videos.

Downloaded videos still belong to the people who made them. Saving a clip to watch offline is a personal use; reposting it without permission can break the platform’s terms and copyright law.

Staying safe with downloader sites

• Never enter a social media password on a downloader site.
• Close pop-ups and new tabs; the real button sits next to the box where you pasted the link.
• Do not install extensions, “codecs” or apps a downloader pushes.
• Check the address bar: popular names have many copycat domains.
