What is FreeCAD?
FreeCAD is an open source, parametric 3D CAD application used to design real-world objects of any size. Every object in FreeCAD is natively parametric, meaning its shape is defined by editable parameters such as numeric values, coordinates, or references to other objects, so a model's history can be revisited and modified at any point. It is built on the Open CASCADE geometry engine, supporting solids, BRep objects, and NURBS curves and surfaces.
The software includes a constraint-based Sketcher, workbenches for mechanical engineering, architecture, and simulation, and a Python scripting API for automation and custom tools. FreeCAD is licensed under LGPL2+, making it free to download and use without any time limit for both personal and commercial projects, positioning it as a no-cost alternative to commercial CAD packages.
