Runway is an applied AI research company that builds generative video and image tools for creators, filmmakers, and enterprises. Founded in 2018 by Cristobal Valenzuela, Alejandro Matamala, and Anastasis Germanidis, the company has been active in AI-generated media since before the current wave of text-to-video tools, including co-authoring the latent diffusion research that underpins Stable Diffusion. Its core product line centers on the Gen-4 family of models: Gen-4 converts a still image into video with controllable camera movement, while Gen-4.5 generates video directly from a text prompt. Runway also offers text-to-speech, AI image generation, and 4K upscaling within the same platform, so a project can move from concept to finished clip without switching tools.

Beyond generation, Runway's Aleph model allows users to edit existing video footage using text prompts, such as adding or removing objects, changing lighting or weather, applying a style transfer, or generating a new camera angle, without re-shooting or fully regenerating the clip. Act-Two brings performance capture to the platform, letting a user apply the motion and expressions from a driving video, filmed on any camera, onto a character reference image. Runway reports more than 50 million users and serves customers across film, advertising, architecture, and robotics, in addition to research partnerships exploring general world models. Plans range from a free tier with limited credits to paid Standard, Pro, and Max subscriptions, plus a custom Enterprise tier with SSO and team management features.
