What is Marmoset Toolbag?
Marmoset Toolbag provides rendering, a material library, an asset browser and a viewer, published across character art, environment art, hard surface art and film and television work, with provision for studios and schools.
Real-time rendering is the property that defines this tool, and its value is about iteration speed rather than final image quality.
Traditional offline rendering produces an image over minutes or hours. That is acceptable for a final frame and it is destructive to the process of getting there, because every adjustment to lighting, material or camera requires waiting to see the result. An artist working that way makes far fewer adjustments than they would like, and settles earlier than they should.
Real-time rendering shows the result as the change is made. The artist adjusts a light and sees it immediately, which means they try twenty variations instead of three, and the work is better because the feedback loop is tight rather than because the renderer is superior.
Baking is the other core function and it is where much of this tool's professional use sits. Baking transfers detail from a high-resolution sculpt onto a low-resolution model as texture maps, so a game character with a few thousand triangles appears to have the detail of one with millions. Getting a bake wrong produces visible artefacts along seams and across hard edges, and diagnosing them is a specialised skill.
The viewer serves portfolio and client presentation, letting a model be examined interactively rather than as fixed renders, which is now the expected way to present work.
