Grandstream UCM

The UCM series is Grandstream's IP PBX line, sold primarily as hardware appliances rather than as software to install on a server of your own.

Grandstream's structural advantage is that it manufactures the entire chain: the PBX, the desk phones, the conference units, the Wi-Fi access points and the network switches. Interoperability between a PBX and its handsets is a persistent source of trouble in this category, with provisioning quirks and firmware mismatches consuming installer time, and buying both ends from one vendor removes that class of problem entirely.

The appliance model suits its target market of small and mid-sized businesses that want a phone system rather than a Linux server to maintain. A UCM arrives configured to work, which is a different proposition from an open source distribution requiring an operating system, sizing decisions and ongoing patching.

GDMS, Grandstream's cloud management platform, configures, manages and troubleshoots deployments and is offered free, which matters most for resellers and managed service providers supporting many small sites: remote management without a per-site licence fee is what makes small deployments economic to service. The wider portfolio spans indoor Wi-Fi access points, point-to-point bridges and networking gear, so a single vendor can supply an entire small office installation. Pricing is not published, being sold through channel partners.
