Enfocus

Enfocus makes preflight and workflow automation tools for the printing industry, best known for checking incoming PDF files against a specification and correcting the problems it finds. Preflight is the unglamorous step that decides whether a print job runs cleanly.

The problem is that customers supply files that are wrong in predictable ways. Missing fonts, images at the wrong resolution, colours in the wrong space and no bleed are the standard four, and a printer that discovers them at the press has lost the slot, while one that catches them on receipt asks for a corrected file the same day.

Automatic correction is what separates a checker from a useful tool. Many of those faults can be fixed deterministically without asking anyone, and a workflow that repairs what it safely can and escalates only genuine ambiguity removes most of the human handling from routine jobs.

Automation across the whole route is where the larger saving sits. Receiving a file, checking it, correcting it, routing it and notifying the customer are individually small tasks that consume a prepress operator's day, and a printer running hundreds of jobs a week gains far more from automating the whole sequence than from any single check within it.
