How to Make a Group Chat on Snapchat (2026 Guide)
Updated October 2026: Snapchat group chats are bigger and easier to manage than when this guide was first written. A group can now hold up to 200 friends (201 people including you), and members can be removed, which was not possible before. The steps below follow Snapchat’s own help pages.
Group chats let you send Chats, Snaps, voice notes and calls to several friends at once. Snaps sent to a group do not count toward Streaks with individual friends, but they can count toward a Streak for the whole group.
How to create a group chat
- Swipe right from the Camera screen to open the Chat screen.
- Tap the chat icon at the bottom of the Chat screen.
- Select the friends you want in the group.
- Start chatting. You can name the group from its group profile.
Nobody can join a group on their own. Someone already in it has to add them directly or send an invite link.
How to add people to a group
- Go to the Chat screen.
- Press and hold the group chat.
- Tap Add Members to Group and select more friends.
You can also share an invite link from the group profile. The friend taps the invite in their Chat feed to join.
How to remove someone from a group
- Go to the Chat screen and tap the group to open the Group Profile.
- Press and hold the member you want to remove.
- Tap Remove from Group and confirm.
A removed member can no longer send or receive messages in that group. If you change your mind, any member can add them back.
How to mute a group
Open the group profile and use its notification settings to silence the group. You stay in the group and can still read everything when you open it.
How to leave a group
Open the group profile, tap Leave Group and confirm.
Useful group chat features
- Mentions: type @ and choose a username, or type a member’s display name, to notify them directly.
- Read status: press and hold a message to see who has read or saved it.
- Snap views: when members open a Snap you sent, their names appear under it.
- Search: your groups also show up in Search, so you can find a quiet group without scrolling.
