What is Shop Pay Installments?

Shop Pay Installments is the pay-over-time option within Shop Pay, Shopify's accelerated checkout, letting shoppers split purchases into instalments at merchants running on Shopify without adding a separate provider to the checkout.

Being part of the checkout rather than an addition to it is the whole advantage and it removes the integration question entirely. A Shopify merchant considering instalments otherwise evaluates providers, adds a script, tests the checkout and manages a second settlement flow, whereas this is a setting on a checkout already installed.

Shop Pay's speed is what makes the instalment option effective rather than the instalments themselves, since a shopper whose details are already stored completes a purchase in a couple of taps, and adding a payment choice at that moment converts far better than introducing a new provider's flow.

The constraint is equally clear: this exists for merchants on Shopify, so it is not a provider a retailer chooses on its merits against Afterpay or Affirm, but a capability that comes with a platform decision made for other reasons. It also means orders, refunds and settlement all appear in the same Shopify admin as every other sale, with fraud and risk handled by the platform rather than by a third party the merchant has to reconcile against. Shopify publishes Shop Pay's rates within its own merchant pricing rather than separately. Shop Pay Installments is therefore a platform capability rather than a provider chosen on its merits.

Shop Pay Installments FAQs

No standalone rate is published. Shopify publishes Shop Pay rates within its own merchant pricing rather than as a separate product, and the acquirer's installments URL returns a 404.

It is part of the checkout rather than an addition to it, so a Shopify merchant does not evaluate providers, add a script, test the checkout and manage a second settlement flow.

A shopper whose details are already stored completes a purchase in a couple of taps, and adding a payment choice at that moment converts better than introducing a new provider's flow.

It exists for merchants on Shopify, so it is not chosen on its merits against Afterpay or Affirm but comes with a platform decision made for other reasons.

In the same Shopify admin as every other order, since settlement runs through Shopify Payments rather than a separate provider account.
