What is Affirm?
Affirm provides pay-over-time payment plans with no fees, through an app showing purchasing power and participating stores, the Affirm Card for online and in-store use, and a browser extension, alongside a separate route for businesses.
Offering longer interest-bearing terms alongside short interest-free ones is what separates Affirm from the pure pay-in-four providers, and it makes it a different product. A four-payment split works for a pair of shoes; a mattress or a bicycle needs twelve or twenty-four months, and that is consumer lending with an interest rate rather than a deferred payment.
Stating no fees while charging interest on longer plans is a precise claim rather than a contradiction, and it is the honest half of Affirm's positioning: there are no late fees or hidden charges, and the total cost is shown before the shopper commits, which is more transparent than a credit card that reveals the cost over months.
Showing purchasing power in the app before shopping is a small but consequential design choice, because a shopper who knows their limit in advance does not reach checkout and get declined, which is where both the retailer and the provider lose the sale. The Affirm Card extends the same terms to physical stores. Merchant rates are not published.

No merchant rate is published. BNPL providers quote per merchant on volume, average order value and industry, and charge the merchant rather than the shopper on interest-free plans.
