NGP VAN

NGP VAN is campaign software for Democratic and progressive campaigns, combining fundraising and compliance with the VAN voter contact system that field organisers use to canvass, phone bank and track voter interactions.

The shared voter file is what makes NGP VAN structurally different from generic campaign tooling, and it is a genuinely unusual arrangement. Democratic committees maintain a common voter database that campaigns up and down the ballot work from, so a door knocked by a Senate campaign is visible to the county campaign, and the data improves cumulatively across cycles rather than being rebuilt every election. Software that reads and writes that shared file is not replaceable by an equivalent product, because the value is in the file rather than the interface.

Compliance is the other half and it is unforgiving. Campaign finance reporting is governed by the FEC federally and by fifty separate state regimes, with contribution limits, source restrictions and filing deadlines that carry legal consequences for errors. A fundraising system that does not enforce those rules at the point of donation creates problems that surface at filing.

Field operations are the daily use: cutting turf for canvassers, assigning lists to volunteers, recording contact outcomes and feeding those back so the next canvasser knows what happened. That loop is what a professional field programme runs on, and it is why the software matters more in the final weeks than at any other point.
