A product designer working in CAD needs to see what something will look like made from brushed aluminium under showroom lighting, and needs it in minutes rather than as a rendering project. They are not lighting a scene artistically; they are evaluating a design decision.

That requires a renderer whose defaults produce a plausible result immediately, with a material library where selecting anodised aluminium gives you anodised aluminium rather than a set of parameters to configure. Renderers built for film assume an artist who wants control over everything, which is correct for film and wrong for a designer with an hour.

CAD plugins matter for the same reason. The model lives in the CAD system and continues changing, so a workflow requiring export loses the connection and means every design revision is re-exported and re-set-up.

Network rendering addresses the point at which visualisation becomes production work, since a catalogue of several hundred products in multiple finishes is thousands of images, and distributing that across machines is the difference between overnight and a fortnight.

The digital asset manager reflects that mature product visualisation generates enormous quantities of images that must be found later, and the usual outcome without one is that renders are recreated because nobody can locate the previous version.
