Ridership tracking is the capability that changed this field most and the one districts underestimate. Knowing which students actually boarded which bus, rather than which students were assigned to it, answers a question that used to be unanswerable, and it is the question that matters when a child does not arrive home.

That capability also produces routing data nobody previously had. Assignments describe intent while ridership describes reality, and a stop assigned twelve students that four actually use is a stop the route could skip, which is the sort of saving that only becomes visible once boarding is recorded rather than assumed.

Parent applications shifted the support burden in a way districts feel immediately. A transportation office spends an extraordinary share of its time answering calls asking where a bus is, and an application showing the answer removes most of those calls, freeing staff who were doing nothing else productive during the morning and afternoon runs.
