Transfinder

Transfinder provides school bus routing and transportation management, with large urban districts among its named customers. School transportation is a routing problem with constraints that make it considerably harder than commercial delivery routing, which is why dedicated software exists for it.

The constraints are what distinguish it. Every student must be collected within a maximum ride time, stops must be at safe locations without dangerous road crossings, buses must arrive within a tight window at each school, and students with disabilities have individual requirements that are legally binding rather than preferences.

Scale compounds all of that. A large district runs hundreds of buses collecting tens of thousands of students, the routes interact because buses do multiple runs, and a change to one route cascades. Nobody can hold that in their head, which is why districts running this manually accept routes that are years out of date.

The cost of poor routing is measured in buses. A district that can serve the same students with five fewer vehicles saves the purchase, the fuel, the maintenance and five drivers' salaries every year, which in a public budget is a genuinely large sum and the reason this software gets funded.

No pricing is published, which is normal for public sector software procured through formal tender processes rather than bought from a website.
