Devfolio is a hackathon platform positioned around redefining economic opportunities for builders, having powered its first community hackathon in January 2019.

The builder framing rather than the developer framing is deliberate and worth reading carefully. A developer is someone with a job title; a builder is someone who makes things, which includes students, self-taught programmers and people building outside formal employment. In markets where formal software careers are harder to enter, that distinction matters, because the platform's purpose is partly to create a visible track record for people who lack a conventional one.

That explains the economic opportunity language. A hackathon submission on a public profile is evidence of capability for someone with no employment history to point at, and for participants in that position an event is a portfolio-building exercise rather than a weekend diversion.

Organising a hackathon is published as a distinct path alongside participating, covering the standard requirements: registration, team formation, submission and judging.

Community hackathons rather than corporate ones are the stated origin, which shapes the product. Community events have different economics from corporate ones: no procurement budget, organisers who are volunteers, and participants who choose freely between competing events on the same weekend. A platform serving that market has to be free or nearly free to organisers and genuinely good for participants, because neither side is captive.

Pricing is not published, which is consistent with a community-oriented platform typically funded through sponsorship rather than organiser fees.
