What is Xero?
Xero is small business accounting software covering invoicing, payments, bills, purchase orders, expense claims and bank reconciliation, with payroll, project tracking, mileage, quotes and fixed asset management layered above the core ledger. It occupies the position most directly comparable to QuickBooks, and the vendor publishes its own comparisons against both QuickBooks and FreshBooks, which is a reasonable indication of where it expects to be evaluated.
Bank reconciliation is the feature that defines daily experience with this category of software. Accounting products are judged in practice by how little time reconciling the bank feed takes each week, because that is the recurring task a business owner actually performs, and everything else happens monthly or annually. Xero puts reconciliation at the centre of its feature presentation rather than treating it as a background function, which reflects that reality accurately.
The integration ecosystem is the second differentiator, with more than 1,000 apps connecting to Xero. That number matters more than any single feature for a growing business, because the accounting ledger inevitably becomes the hub that inventory, point of sale, payroll, expenses and industry-specific tools all report into, and a ledger that connects to what you already run saves more time than one with a longer built-in feature list.
JAX is the vendor's AI finance assistant, positioned as automating work and providing clarity so the books stay current. Industry-specific guidance is published for construction, non-profits, landlords, farming, e-commerce, manufacturing, retail and hospitality.
A substantial accountant and bookkeeper programme runs alongside the product, including a Partner Hub, practice management tooling, and the Xero Cashbook and Xero Ledger products intended for practices managing client files. That matters for a small business because the accountant's preference frequently decides which software gets used, and Xero has invested heavily in being the one they recommend.
Three plans are published. Standard is $50 per month and Premium is $75 per month, with a Starter plan below them, and an introductory 80 percent discount applies for the first three months.
