What is FreshBooks?

FreshBooks is small business accounting software built outward from invoicing rather than from the general ledger, and that origin is still visible in how the product is organised. Invoicing comes first, with tracked time and expenses added automatically, taxes calculated and payment options customised. For freelancers and service businesses billing by time and project rather than selling stock, that ordering matches how the business actually works.

Billing and payments are treated as a distinct capability from invoicing itself, covering automated invoices, secure online payments and built-in reminders so cash flow stays predictable without chasing. Automated reminders are the highest-value feature in this product for most independent operators, because the reason freelancers get paid late is usually that nobody followed up, and the follow-up is uncomfortable to send personally.

Expenses cover mobile receipt scanning, bank account imports and automated categorisation. Receipt scanning on a phone is the practical form of expense capture for someone without an office, and the alternative is a shoebox reconciled badly in March.

Payroll is included as a way to pay yourself and your team while tracking expenses and calculating taxes in one place, which removes a common second subscription. Accounting, mileage tracking, reporting, client management, bookkeeping, proposals, estimates and team management round out the feature set, with mobile apps for working away from a desk.

Plan structure is organised by who you are rather than by feature count, with separate paths published for freelancers, self-employed people, businesses with contractors and businesses with employees. That segmentation is genuinely helpful, since the difference between paying contractors and employing staff changes the tax and payroll requirements fundamentally rather than incrementally.

The Lite plan is published at $23.00 USD per month, with an introductory 90 percent discount for three months. Additional team members are charged at $11 per month per user, which is worth modelling before committing if you expect to add staff. Award-winning in-house customer support is offered, and the vendor publishes comparisons against Xero and QuickBooks.
