What is Brex?

Brex combines corporate cards, banking, expense management, travel and bill pay into one financial stack operating across more than 120 countries, with the vendor reporting over 35,000 companies using it. The global footprint is the characteristic that separates it from most spend management tools, which handle domestic operations well and international ones as an afterthought. A company with employees in several countries otherwise ends up running separate card programmes per entity, which is where visibility disappears.

The vendor's own framing is that the card is just the start, and the surrounding capabilities are what justify the platform. Corporate cards carry built-in spend controls, expense management uses AI to automate approvals and expense reports with real-time tracking, travel is booked and managed in-app, bill pay handles AI-powered invoice entry and payment automation, and banking and treasury offer a published yield of up to 3.70 percent.

Preventing overspend rather than reporting it is the design position worth understanding. Budgets and spend limits are set with auto-enforced controls, so the card declines what falls outside policy instead of the finance team discovering it during month-end review. That is a categorically different model from traditional expense reporting, where an employee spends first and finance argues about it afterwards, and it is the reason companies switch to this class of product.

Travel deserves separate mention because booking inside the same system that holds the policy and the card removes the reconciliation step entirely. A trip booked externally and expensed later generates work at every stage, whereas one booked in-app arrives already coded.

Solutions are differentiated by stage: startups get a complete financial stack, mid-size companies get AI-powered budgets, expenses, payments and travel worldwide, and enterprises get automation aimed at making compliance straightforward. API access is available for integration into internal systems.

Pricing starts at $0 per user per month for Essentials, aimed at startups and growing companies, with Premium at $12 per user per month for mid-sized companies scaling up.
