Contracts have negotiated discounts, custom terms, multiple entities on one agreement and renewal dates that were amended twice, and none of that fits a model designed around a customer picking a published plan.

Serving software companies specifically shapes the reporting. Annual recurring revenue, churn, expansion and net revenue retention are the measures a software business is judged on by its investors, and a billing system that produces them directly saves the monthly reconstruction in a spreadsheet that most finance teams otherwise perform, along with the recurring disagreement about which version of the number is the right one.
