VyOS

VyOS is a network operating system positioned around sovereignty: running your own routing and security software on hardware you control, across cloud, edge and on-premise deployments.

That framing describes a genuine architectural choice rather than a marketing angle. Conventional enterprise networking couples the operating system to the vendor's hardware, so the routing software, the switch and the support contract arrive together and are replaced together. A software network operating system decouples them: the same routing platform runs on a virtual machine in a public cloud, on commodity hardware in a data centre and on a small appliance at a branch office, configured identically in all three.

For an organisation with a hybrid estate that consistency is worth a great deal. The alternative is a cloud router configured through one vendor's console, a data centre router configured through another's command line, and a branch device configured through a third, with three sets of expertise required and three places for a configuration error to hide.

The published solution set is specific: EVPN with VXLAN for data centre fabrics and campus networks, data centre interconnect, high-availability border routing, policy-driven firewalling, network address translation and DMVPN for connecting sites.

EVPN and VXLAN appearing for both data centre and campus is notable, since the technology originated in data centres and its extension to campus networks is comparatively recent.
