What is Vaadin?

Vaadin lets developers build web user interfaces in Java rather than in JavaScript, with a UI editor, acceleration kits, enterprise building blocks, a migration toolkit for legacy applications, SwingBridge for modernising Swing applications, an AI layer, add-ons and a component showcase. Pricing is published per developer with a permanently free tier.

Writing the interface in Java is the entire proposition and it suits a specific and substantial situation. An enterprise team maintaining Java systems, without frontend specialists and without appetite to hire them, can produce a modern browser application in the language it already knows. That is a real answer to a real staffing problem rather than a technical preference.

SwingBridge is the most pointed offering in the product line. A great deal of internal enterprise software runs as Swing desktop applications that nobody wants to rewrite and everybody wants in a browser, and a bridge is a far smaller commitment than a rebuild.

The trade off is the familiar one for server-driven interfaces. State lives on the server, which simplifies the programming model and constrains behaviour that JavaScript frameworks handle naturally, so a highly interactive interface is the case to test rather than assume.

Vaadin FAQs

The Free plan is published at 0 euro or 0 dollars per developer forever. Pro is published at 149 euro or 159 dollars per developer, with higher tiers above it.

An enterprise team maintaining Java systems, without frontend specialists and without appetite to hire them, can produce a modern browser application in the language it already knows.

A path for modernising Swing desktop applications, which is a far smaller commitment than rewriting internal software nobody wants to rebuild and everybody wants in a browser.

State lives on the server, which simplifies the programming model and constrains behaviour JavaScript frameworks handle naturally, so a highly interactive interface should be tested first.

It lets a team cost the framework against headcount before adopting, which is unusual in this category where most alternatives are free and unsupported.
