Spanning Backup protects Microsoft 365 data with what the vendor describes as a simplified, affordable and secure backup and recovery solution. Those three words are chosen carefully and they describe a deliberate position at the accessible end of this market.

Simplicity is the harder claim to deliver and the more valuable one. Backup products accumulate configuration options because every customer has one more requirement, and the result is a system requiring a specialist to operate, which is precisely what a small organisation buying Microsoft 365 backup does not have available.

The affordability point reflects who is exposed. Large enterprises already run backup discipline as a matter of course; the organisations losing data to a deleted mailbox or a ransomware incident are small businesses and departments that assumed the cloud provider handled it, and reaching them requires a price they will actually approve.

Recovery rather than backup is where products in this category should be judged, and rarely are. Everybody's backup runs; what differs is how long a restore takes, whether it can be done by the person who needs it rather than an administrator, and whether it puts the data back where it was rather than somewhere else.
