What is Laravel?

Laravel is a batteries-included PHP framework with opinions on routing, queues, authentication and most other decisions a web application has to make, surrounded by an open source ecosystem of more than thirty packages. It now also sells Laravel Cloud, a hosting platform that autoscales under load and down to zero when idle, adds databases, workers, cache and storage, and provides production-like preview environments for reviewing changes.

Having opinions is the framework's explicit pitch and the vendor now frames it in terms of AI-assisted development: thousands of decisions an agent does not have to make, producing code that follows a shape anyone familiar with the framework can read. That was always the argument for conventions, and it becomes more valuable when code is being generated rather than typed.

Preview environments per pull request are the most useful part of the hosting product. Reviewing a change in a running environment rather than in a diff catches the class of problem that only appears when the code executes.

The consideration for a buyer is the pull toward one vendor. The framework is free and open source, while the surrounding paid products are designed to be the obvious next step, and that convenience is worth weighing deliberately rather than by default.

The framework decides routing, queues, authentication and most other structural questions, so a developer writes application logic rather than assembling a stack.

Strong conventions mean thousands of decisions an agent does not have to make, and generated code lands in a shape anyone familiar with the framework can read.
