Format Factory

Format Factory is free multifunctional media file processing software for Windows, covering video, audio and image conversion alongside a set of utilities that reach well beyond format changing.

The scope is the notable thing about a free tool of this age. The video functions cover conversion, clipping, joining, splitting, muxing, cropping and logo removal, which is a working editing set rather than a converter with trimming attached. Muxing in particular is a genuinely technical operation, combining separate video and audio streams into one container, and it is not something free consumer converters usually expose.

Two inclusions have nothing to do with media formats at all and are more useful for it. Format Factory extracts Zip, RAR and 7z archives, and it records the screen. Both are tasks a user converting media frequently needs and would otherwise install separate software for, and bundling them reflects an understanding of what the same person is actually doing at their computer.

Downloading files from video sites is also included. The current release is version 5.22.0.0, updated in March 2026, at roughly 162 megabytes for Windows, distributed by direct download, BitTorrent, a mirror site and an older 32-bit build. The interface is published in English, Simplified Chinese, Afrikaans, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Russian, Polish, Portuguese, Vietnamese and Hindi, with community help invited for further translations. Format Factory is free with no licence cost.
