Datadog Network Monitoring is the network component of Datadog's observability platform, sitting alongside infrastructure, application, log and user experience monitoring rather than standing alone. Being part of one platform is the entire argument for choosing it.

The reason is that modern failures cross layers. An application that is slow may be slow because of its own code, the database behind it, the host it runs on or the network between any of them, and investigating those in four separate tools means four sets of timestamps a human is reconciling under pressure.

Network monitoring in a cloud environment is also a different problem from the traditional one. There are no switches to poll; the network is a set of connections between services and availability zones, and what matters is which service is talking to which and how much of that traffic is failing or slow.
