What is Basware?

Basware describes its offering as autonomous invoice lifecycle management that is fully compliant, fully protected and governed by the customer's own rules. The three qualifiers matter in that order because they describe the sequence a finance team worries about: is it legal, is it safe, and does it do what we told it to.

Lifecycle rather than capture is the scope claim. An invoice arrives, is matched against an order and a receipt, routed for approval, coded to a ledger account, paid and archived, and automating only the first of those leaves most of the work in place. Products that address the whole sequence are solving a different problem from those that read a document.

Autonomous is the current word for straight through processing, where a correctly matched invoice is approved and paid without a human seeing it, and exceptions are the only thing that reach a person. The measure of any product in this category is the proportion of invoices that clear without touch, and that number depends as much on supplier data quality as on the software.

Governed by your rules is the qualifier that should reassure a controller. Automation in payments fails badly rather than gracefully, and a system that applies the organisation's own approval thresholds and segregation of duties is materially different from one that optimises for throughput. Basware publishes a pricing page but no rates, so scoping is a conversation.

A pricing page exists but publishes no rates. Scope is set by invoice volume, entities and the connected systems, so a figure comes from a scoped conversation.

Arrival, matching against order and receipt, approval routing, ledger coding, payment and archive. Automating only capture leaves most of the work in place.

The proportion of invoices clearing without touch depends as much on supplier data quality as on the software, which is why onboarding suppliers matters.

Automation in payments fails badly rather than gracefully. A system applying the organisation's own approval thresholds differs from one optimised purely for throughput.
