Altera Digital Health provides electronic health record and hospital information systems, organising its offering around the audiences inside a health system: executives, clinicians and IT leaders. The company holds several long established health IT platforms acquired from Allscripts.

Addressing those three audiences separately is more meaningful than it first appears, because they want opposing things from the same system. Clinicians want fewer clicks and less time between them and the patient. IT leaders want a platform they can secure, integrate and keep running. Executives want cost control and reportable outcomes. An electronic health record that optimises purely for one of these is resented by the other two, and clinician dissatisfaction with these systems is a well documented contributor to burnout.

Holding established platforms rather than a single new product shapes the business. Hospitals run these systems for decades, so continuity of support matters more than novelty, and a vendor acquiring a platform inherits an installed base that cannot easily move.

That is also why migration is rarely the answer in this market. Replacing a hospital's clinical system is a multi year programme with real patient safety exposure during transition, so buyers weigh the incumbent's roadmap heavily.
