Agent Ransack

Agent Ransack is file searching software from Mythicsoft, and the vendor states plainly that Agent Ransack and FileLocator Pro are now the same product distinguished only by mode: Lite is free and Pro is licensed, so a user chooses which name they prefer rather than which product they need.

Content search rather than filename search is the capability that matters and it is what the operating system does badly. Finding every file containing a particular phrase across a large directory tree, including inside documents and archives, is the task people reach for a dedicated tool to perform.

Regular expression support is what separates this class of tool from a search box. An administrator looking for a pattern rather than a string, across thousands of configuration files or log directories, needs expressions and result exporting, and that is a different job from finding a document somebody misplaced.

The honesty about the two products being one is worth commending. Vendors usually maintain the fiction of separate products long past the point of truth, and stating it directly saves prospective users a comparison that has no answer. The only decision left is whether Lite mode covers what you need or Pro does.
