Updated October 2026: the original y2mate.com did not respond when we checked on 27 October 2026, and its partner site YouTubePP now shows a music-industry (IFPI) notice. Sites using the Y2Mate name on other domains such as y2mate.nu or y2mate.is forward to further domains and are not the original service.
Y2Mate was one of the most used YouTube to MP3 and MP4 converters. You pasted a video link, picked a format and quality, and downloaded the file. Like many converters, it ran into pressure from music and film rights holders, and its main domain is no longer online.
Why the Y2Mate copycats are risky
- They are run by unknown operators who borrowed the name after the original closed.
- Many redirect through several domains and are heavy with aggressive ads and pop-ups.
- Some push browser notifications, extensions or downloads you did not ask for.
Alternatives that still work (October 2026)
- YouTube Premium: the official way to download videos and music for offline viewing inside the YouTube apps.
- 4K Video Downloader Plus: a desktop app for videos, playlists and channels.
- cobalt (cobalt.tools): an open-source, ad-free web downloader.
- SaveFrom.net, ClipConverter.cc and Yout.com: web converters still working when we tested.
Our full YouTube downloader roundup covers what still works and what has closed.
Downloaded videos still belong to the people who made them. Saving a clip to watch offline is a personal use; reposting it without permission can break the platform’s terms and copyright law.
Staying safe with downloader sites
- Never enter a social media password on a downloader site.
- Close pop-ups and new tabs; the real button sits next to the box where you pasted the link.
- Do not install extensions, “codecs” or apps a downloader pushes.
- Check the address bar: popular names have many copycat domains.
