What is 1upHealth?

1upHealth publishes a set of products aimed at health insurers, covering Patient Access, Provider Access, Payer-to-Payer Data Exchange, Electronic Prior Authorization, Provider Directory, Formulary and Clinical Connect.

That product list maps almost exactly onto United States regulatory requirements, and understanding that explains what the platform is for.

Interoperability rules require health insurers to make specific data available through standard interfaces. Patient Access means members can retrieve their own claims and clinical data through an application of their choosing. Provider Access means treating clinicians can obtain it. Payer-to-Payer Exchange means that when a member changes insurer, their history follows them. Provider Directory and Formulary must be published in machine-readable form.

Each is a distinct obligation with its own technical specification, deadline and enforcement position, which is why they appear as separate products rather than as features.

Electronic prior authorization is the requirement with the most direct effect on patients. Prior authorization is the process by which an insurer approves treatment before it happens, it is conducted substantially by fax and telephone, and delays in it postpone care. Moving it to an electronic standard is intended to compress that, and it is among the more consequential changes in the set.

The practical question for an insurer evaluating this is not whether the capability exists but whether compliance is genuinely achieved. These rules carry specific conformance expectations, and a partially conformant implementation satisfies neither the regulator nor the applications trying to connect.

Clinical Connect extends beyond the mandates toward using the data rather than only exposing it, which is where value beyond compliance would come from.

Pricing is not published, which is standard for regulatory infrastructure sold to insurers.

1upHealth FAQs

No pricing is published, which is standard for regulatory infrastructure sold to insurers. Cost is normally quoted on covered lives or API volume.

Because it maps onto United States interoperability requirements. Each product corresponds to a distinct obligation with its own specification, deadline and enforcement position.

So that when a member changes insurer, their claims and clinical history follows them rather than starting again, which is what the rules require insurers to support.

Because prior authorization is conducted substantially by fax and telephone, and delays in it postpone actual care. Moving it to an electronic standard is intended to compress that.

Not whether the capability exists but whether conformance is genuinely achieved, since a partially conformant implementation satisfies neither the regulator nor the applications trying to connect.
