Relativity's position in this market is worth understanding because it is unusual and it affects the buying decision more than any feature.

Relativity is the de facto standard platform in eDiscovery, and that produces effects a feature comparison will not show. Litigation support professionals are trained on it, service providers build their businesses around hosting it, and opposing counsel and courts are familiar with what it produces. When a matter involves several firms, the platform they can all work in is frequently the deciding factor.

That standardisation has real value: staff can be hired who already know the system, work can be moved between providers, and productions arrive in expected formats. It also means the platform is rarely the cheapest option, and organisations with straightforward, low-volume discovery needs may be buying an ecosystem they will not use.

The move to cloud with RelativityOne addressed the historical constraint of the on-premise product, which required infrastructure and specialist administration that only large firms and dedicated providers could sustain. Delivering it as a service widened who can run it directly rather than through a provider.

Generative AI in discovery is the current frontier and the sensible expectation is assistance rather than replacement. Technology-assisted review has been accepted by courts for over a decade in its statistical form, and generative approaches are newer and less tested, so the defensibility question matters as much as the accuracy one.
