What is Particle?
Particle is an IoT platform covering more of the stack than most competitors, spanning application development, edge infrastructure, embedded intelligence, cloud infrastructure, network and connectivity, and device management. That breadth is its defining characteristic: connectivity in particular is included rather than left to the customer, described as wireless connectivity that just works, which removes the cellular contract and SIM management that otherwise sits between a prototype and a shipped product. Note that Particle has been acquired by Digi, which is worth factoring into a long-term evaluation.
The development tooling is unusually complete for this field. Workbench is an integrated development and debugging environment, a Web IDE allows code to be written, compiled and flashed over the air from a browser, and a command line interface interacts with devices and the Particle Device Cloud. Thousands of drivers and libraries exist for common sensors and peripherals, which is the practical difference between a week of integration work and an afternoon.
Several newer capabilities extend where Particle runs. Particle on Linux adds platform support for any Linux device rather than Particle's own hardware only. A bare metal runtime lets custom software run inside a device within a container. Edge ML deploys and upgrades machine learning models on devices, addressing the growing case where inference happens on the device rather than in the cloud. Blueprints, in beta, simplify deploying applications for intelligent devices. Over-the-air software updates are described as reliable and system-wide.
Pricing is published with a genuinely free tier for prototyping and personal projects, then Basic and Plus tiers distinguished by data automation capability rather than device count alone.
