Azure Front Door

Azure Front Door is Microsoft's modern cloud content delivery network, delivering static and dynamic content at low latency and high throughput from cloud or on-premises origins. What distinguishes it technically is the underlying network: delivery runs on Microsoft's massively scalable private global network rather than traversing the public internet between edge and origin, which is where much of the latency variability in content delivery comes from.

Security is genuinely built in rather than attached. A web application firewall, bot protection and DDoS protection are all part of the service, and Azure Private Link support allows the application origin to be reached privately in line with a zero trust model. Real-time analytics cover both traffic and security monitoring together. For organisations that would otherwise buy a CDN and a WAF separately and integrate them, consolidating both is a meaningful simplification as well as a cost question.

The service is fully programmable and API-driven, integrated with Azure DNS, Azure Web Apps and a wide range of other Azure services, so deployment can be automated alongside the rest of an Azure estate rather than configured by hand. Automated deployment is called out as a distinct capability.

Microsoft makes a specific commercial claim worth verifying against your own traffic: pricing is described as simple, easy and transparent, with no additional charges for transferring data from an Azure datacentre to an Azure Front Door edge location. That is the same structural advantage CloudFront offers within AWS, and for an application already hosted in Azure it usually matters more than the headline per-gigabyte rate. New Azure accounts include a 200 dollar credit, and pay-as-you-go rates apply thereafter.
