What is Stoplight?

Stoplight is an API design-first platform that lets teams create, prototype and document OpenAPI descriptions and JSON Schemas through a visual editor, reducing the need to hand-write specs. It includes automatically generated interactive documentation, hosted mock servers for parallel frontend and backend development, and style guide tooling to enforce consistency and governance across many APIs. Stoplight integrates with Git-based workflows so design artifacts can live alongside source code.

Stoplight was acquired by SmartBear in 2023 and continues to operate as a distinct product with its own paid plans, while some of its open-source tools have been integrated into SmartBear's SwaggerHub. Plans range from a limited free tier through Basic, Startup and Pro Team tiers billed per user, up to custom Enterprise agreements with SSO and dedicated support.

Key Features of Stoplight

Stoplight lists 8 documented features, including Visual no-code and low-code OpenAPI and JSON Schema editor, Automatically generated interactive API reference documentation and Hosted OpenAPI-powered mock servers for parallel development. The list below covers what the product does rather than how it is marketed.

  • Visual no-code and low-code OpenAPI and JSON Schema editor
  • Automatically generated interactive API reference documentation
  • Hosted OpenAPI-powered mock servers for parallel development
  • Shared style guides and validation for API governance at scale
  • Git-based workflow support with multi-branch design
  • Custom domains, theming and removed branding on higher tiers
  • Workspace groups, component libraries and activity logs
  • LDAP/SAML SSO on Pro Team and Enterprise plans

Stoplight Pricing

Stoplight lists 3 plans, from $44 to $362.

Basic

$44

per month, billed annually

Design an API as an individual, first 3 users free. The annual billing column is used for all three tiers because the page repeats it in its plan comparison table; monthly billing costs more, and extra users past the free allowance are charged separately.

Startup

$113

per month, billed annually

Build an API program for small teams, first 8 users free, with private workspaces.

Pro Team

$362

per month, billed annually

Govern APIs across the organization, first 15 users free, up to 20 teams and shared style guides. Enterprise is custom quoted.
