Sub-tier visibility is the capability that separates serious supply chain risk tools from supplier databases. An organisation usually knows its direct suppliers well and knows almost nothing about who supplies them, yet single points of failure concentrate at that second and third tier where several apparently independent suppliers turn out to depend on one factory or one port. Automated scorecards address the parallel problem of scale, since assessing several thousand suppliers by questionnaire is not achievable at the frequency risk actually changes.
