That distinction matters more in automotive retail than elsewhere, because a single-rooftop independent and a fifty-store group face the same regulatory and manufacturer requirements with vastly different administrative capacity.

The CDK Global Modern Retail Suite addresses the buying journey and the Fixed Operations Suite covers service and parts, which is where dealership profit actually concentrates. Vehicle sales margins have compressed for years while service bays and parts counters remain reliably profitable, so software that improves fixed operations efficiency targets the part of the business that pays for the rest.

Serving OEMs and independent software vendors alongside dealers gives CDK Global a position across the whole automotive retail chain, since manufacturers need visibility into dealer performance and third-party vendors need a route to integrate with dealership data. Heavy truck is a distinct market again, with different finance structures and service intervals.
