PTC Vuforia

Vuforia is PTC's enterprise augmented reality platform, made up of Vuforia Expert Capture for step by step AR work instructions, Vuforia Studio for experiences built on existing 3D and IoT data, Vuforia Engine for computer vision development, and Vuforia Chalk for remote assistance.

Splitting into four products rather than one platform is the decision that makes Vuforia legible, because the industrial AR use cases genuinely have nothing in common. Capturing an expert technician's procedure so a novice can follow it, visualising sensor data on a physical machine, writing a computer vision application, and putting an expert on a video call who can draw on what the technician sees are four separate problems with four separate buyers.

Expert Capture addresses the skills gap directly and that is the strongest commercial argument in industrial AR. Experienced technicians are retiring faster than they are being replaced, their knowledge is procedural rather than documented, and recording someone performing a task is a far more realistic capture method than asking them to write a manual.

Vuforia Studio leaning on existing 3D and IoT data reflects PTC's position, since PTC already sells CAD and product lifecycle management, so the model of the machine is usually already in the customer's systems. Vuforia Engine is cited as chosen by over one million developers. PTC was named top vendor in Quadrant's 2024 Enterprise Augmented Reality assessment, the fourth consecutive year of recognition.
