What is Cohesity?

Cohesity provides the Cohesity Data Cloud, combining backup and recovery with data security, covering cloud data protection, application recovery and SaaS workloads, with packaging aimed at midsize businesses as well as large enterprises. The company acquired the Veritas enterprise data protection business, substantially enlarging its installed base.

Consolidation onto one platform is the founding argument. Enterprises accumulate secondary storage across backup appliances, archives, test copies and analytics extracts, each with its own hardware and none of it visible as a whole. Holding it on one system reduces both the sprawl and the number of places a copy of production data can sit forgotten and unprotected.

Positioning backup as a security product follows the same reasoning as elsewhere in this category, but Cohesity leans on it hardest: backup data is a complete copy of everything an organisation holds, which makes it simultaneously the recovery path and an extremely attractive target.

Explicit midsize packaging is worth noting, because enterprise data protection is usually priced and implemented for organisations with a dedicated infrastructure team, leaving midsize companies with the same threat and none of the capacity.
