Calligra Suite

Calligra Suite is an open source office and creativity suite from the KDE community, notable for including applications that other office suites leave out entirely.

Alongside Words for word processing with desktop publishing features, Sheets for spreadsheets with formulas and charts, and Stage for presentations with images, video and animation, it ships Karbon, a full vector drawing application. Including a real vector tool inside an office suite is genuinely unusual, and it means diagrams and illustrations for a document can be made properly rather than assembled from the shape tools a word processor provides.

Karbon is described as easy to use, highly customisable and extensible, suiting both people starting with vector graphics and artists producing finished work. The database component supports designing database applications, inserting and editing data, running queries and processing results, with all objects including tables, queries, forms and reports stored in the database itself so data and design are easy to share.

Prospective users should note the project's structure and pace. Plan, the project management component for moderately large projects with multiple resources, offers task dependencies and timing constraints and lets you define tasks, estimate effort, allocate resources and schedule automatically, but along with Kexi it now follows an independent release schedule, and recent Calligra releases contain only four components. The suite is free and open source with no licence fee.
