Mapbox

Mapbox provides mapping, navigation and search infrastructure for developers, organised into three product lines that are bought and priced differently. Maps covers Mapbox GL JS for web, mobile SDKs for iOS and Android, Studio for custom map design, static map images and the Tiling Service for adding custom data. Navigation covers routing and directions, an automotive SDK for in-vehicle infotainment, 3D lane-level guidance, electric vehicle navigation, an autopilot map for automated driving systems and a Matrix API for travel time and distance. Search covers geocoding, address validation, a search interface and address autofill.

Map design as a first-class capability is what distinguishes Mapbox from the alternatives. Studio lets an organisation control cartography rather than accept a provider's default styling, which matters for any application where the map is the product rather than a supporting feature: a property listing site, a delivery application or a vehicle interface all need the map to look like part of the product rather than an embedded panel from somewhere else.

The automotive coverage is unusually deep for a mapping provider, spanning in-vehicle navigation, 3D lane guidance, electric vehicle routing and precision data for autopilot systems. Electric vehicle navigation is a genuinely different routing problem from conventional directions, because range, charging network availability and charging time have to enter the route calculation rather than being considerations the driver handles separately.

Address autofill and validation deserve separate mention from geocoding. Validating an address at the point of entry prevents a delivery failure that would otherwise be discovered by a driver at the wrong door, and it is one of the few features in this category with a directly measurable return.

Geocoding coverage was recently extended with 45 new countries and 73.2 million addresses. Pricing is published as usage-based tiers, at $0.30 per monthly active user above the free allowance, and per-trip pricing from $0.08 falling to $0.064 and $0.048 at higher volumes.
