What is CARTO?

CARTO positions itself as an agentic GIS platform and makes one architectural claim that determines everything else about it: spatial analysis runs inside your existing cloud data warehouse, with data never leaving BigQuery. Connectors cover Google Cloud, AWS, Azure, Snowflake, Databricks and Oracle.

That design resolves the problem that has limited geospatial analysis in most organisations. Traditional GIS requires extracting data into a separate spatial system, which means the analysis runs on a copy that is immediately out of date, governance and access controls have to be reproduced in a second place, and the security team acquires another system holding sensitive data. Running the analysis where the data already lives removes all three objections at once, and for regulated organisations the governance argument alone often decides the purchase.

The stated ambition is scalable spatial analysis for all teams rather than for GIS specialists, and the role-based structure reflects that, with separate paths for data analysts, data scientists, GIS professionals and developers. That breadth matters because the people who need spatial answers, such as a network planner or an underwriter, are usually not the people trained to use GIS software.

Use cases published are specific rather than generic: network deployment, catastrophe modelling, fraud detection, market analysis, environmental management, site selection, geomarketing, data monetisation, IoT analytics, supply chain optimisation, healthcare analytics and territory planning. Catastrophe modelling and fraud detection are the two that best illustrate why spatial analysis belongs next to the rest of the data, since both require joining location against large volumes of transactional or exposure records that already sit in the warehouse.

Industry coverage spans telecoms, insurance, logistics, real estate, financial services, retail, marketing and advertising, and mobility. Capabilities include app development, data enrichment, AI agents and enterprise security controls. CARTO Academy, documentation, a glossary, reports and webinars are published. A free trial is offered and pricing is published on a dedicated page.
